To learn, teach and share with others is the core principle of Shababeek. The program started as a spontaneous initiative from one of the young students, Mohammed Nizam, who came to Ruwwad to see how he could be part of the organization’s work in the community. Later on, Mohammed received a scholarship through the Mousab Khorma Youth Empowerment Fund (MKYEF) to study nursing at one of Jordan’s private university.

Mohammed’s enthusiasm and spirit was clear when he engaged a small group of children with learning difficulties in an activity teaching spelling through a game he had made up. He continued to conduct his “spontaneous sessions” almost daily and soon the group increased in number, and more kids started to ask if they could join in.   Moahmmed stared coming in on Fridays to work with more children and started encouraging them to write journals to help them express their feelings and experiences and to reach a deeper level in the learning-teaching experience.   This spontaneous act by Mohammed was the first window to open the way towards developing Shababeek as a program. Now children of all ages participate in organized workshops conducted by volunteers from within and from outside the community using engaging, creative and fun methods to reflect “fun in learning” as a principle. The workshops are also a way to help identify behavioral problems and to work on them by introducing children to new ideas, values and experiences, and offering them a window of opportunity to understand themselves and see their potential.

Through Shababeek Ruwwad attracts a large number of volunteers from within Jabal Nathif, from other areas in Amman and from outside Jordan who conduct creative workshops around like Bisat Il-Reeh (Magic Carpet) where children use maps, pictures and films to “travel” to other countries, and experience their history and their customs. Other workshops help teach logic, English, Arabic, theater, art, crafts, music appreciation, dance, and many other things.

As part of the program, children and MKYEF students also participate in activities and workshops at cultural centers and spaces outside the area and take part in summer activities all over Amman. They then come back and teach what they have learnt to others and pass on the experience.

Children also learn to play various educational games in the creative arts workshop area such as chess, puzzles, strategy games amongst others.

Shababeek has also incorporated adult learning sessions for people in the community who now have the opportunity to learn to read and write in an engaging, interactive and fun way.

"For first time in my life I watched a movie that children watch in Britain and my geography teacher showed me on the map where it is! I'm learning where all the different countries are in the world, and one day I would like to travel. I never knew the world was so big, they didn't teach me that at school." Aseel

"Before I came to Shams Il-Jabal, I used to play with my friends in the street because our house is very small and my mother has to take care of my baby brothers and sisters. Now my friends and I come here to do puzzles, play board games and even volleyball." Ahmad
